History and Mission

The nonprofit, independent ISACA® is a global leader in IT governance, security, control and assurance. Founded in 1969 as the EDP Auditors Association, ISACA® is the single, leading international source for information technology controls. ISACA® is dedicated to serving the needs of IT governance professionals.

About ISACA®

ISACA® got its start in 1967, when a small group of individuals with similar jobs—auditing controls in the computer systems that were becoming increasingly critical to the operations of their organizations—sat down to discuss the need for a centralized source of information and guidance in the field. In 1969, the group formalized, incorporating as the EDP Auditors Association. In 1976 the association formed an education foundation to undertake large-scale research efforts to expand the knowledge and value of the IT governance and control field.

With more than 86,000 constituents in more than 160 countries, ISACA® ( is a leading global provider of knowledge, certifications, community, advocacy and education on information systems assurance and security, enterprise governance of IT, and IT-related risk and compliance. Founded in 1969, ISACA sponsors international conferences, publishes the ISACA® Journal, and develops international information systems auditing and control standards. It also administers the globally respected Certified Information Systems Auditor™ (CISA®), Certified Information Security Manager® (CISM®) and Certified in the Governance of Enterprise IT® (CGEIT®) and Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control™ (CRISC™) designations.

Although ISACA is now in its 41st year of existence with a worldwide membership, there still are times when members and other constituents are asked, “What exactly is ISACA?” After review and comments from ISACA’s leadership, staff and an external consultant, the following paragraph was developed to clearly describe what ISACA is and what our vibrant association does. ISACA key message: As an independent, nonprofit global membership association, ISACA engages in the development, adoption and use of globally accepted, industry-leading knowledge and practices for information systems. ISACA helps its members achieve individual and organizational success, resulting in greater trust in, and value from, information systems. Its members and certification holders are qualified and skilled professionals who make a difference.

About ITGI®

The IT Governance Institute (ITGI®) was established in 1998 in recognition of the increasing criticality of information technology to enterprise success. In many organizations, success depends on the ability of IT to enable achievement of business goals. In such an environment, governance over IT is as critical a board and management discipline as corporate governance or enterprise governance. Effective IT governance helps ensure that IT supports business goals, maximizes business investment in IT, and appropriately manages IT-related risks and opportunities.

ITGI® is a research think tank that exists to  be the leading reference on IT-enabled business systems governance for the global business community. ITGI® aims to benefit enterprises by assisting enterprise leaders in their responsibility to make IT successful in supporting the enterprise's mission and goals.
